The stop to export of valves from Russia has alarmed the musicians. After my sabbatical due to an epidemic with related complications and various griefs, I return to publishing It is well known that if you have to go to the United States.

Although it is not up to the human and social balance sheet, the impact on international markets and finance is a reality that already has an impact on the daily life of each of us. Sanctions policy has triggered a bullish mechanism on both sides and the cost of living in many countries will continue to rise. In Italy we have seen fuels before, gas and oil, but also seed oils, wheat and derivatives. Fears that stocks might sell out or that prices might skyrocket, as happened in the first days of the lockdown of 2020, they have prompted many to stock up on groceries. Consequently, in several Italian cities, in the last few days there has been another “looting” in supermarkets, and then see the shelves regularly stocked in the following days.
The continuing sanctions on both sides also affect sectors that can be considered less fundamental, like luxury. Diamonds, vodka and caviar won't be arriving from Russia for quite a while, and the tubes used by our beloved amps also pull the gate down.

Stopping the export of valves from Russia had been in the air for a few days already. The scenario of the rush for supplies was repeated as expected, and today it can be difficult to get your hands on significant quantities of Russian made tubes.

Who produces valves

There are currently four major valve producing countries around the world: Russia, China, Czech Republic and Slovakia.

JJ valves come from Slovakia. Shuguang, from China, has long been a major manufacturer supplying material to numerous Western brands they buy, they test, they match and rebrand the products in their own name.

This is precisely the case with TAD, Tube Amp Doctor, which deals with valves made by other factories, mainly Chinese.
Think also of GT, namely Groove Tubes, which in the past collaborated with Czechoslovakian factories, then produced a small amount of valves in the USA. Today it is partly sourced from Russian producers, partly Chinese.

The export block mainly affects Electro Harmonix, which in Russia owns and operates a factory where EHX valves are manufactured, Tung-Sol Genalex Gold Lion, Mullard, Svetlana e Sovtek.
A hard blow for an already niche market, but not a total closure of the taps which still leaves a crack.

It could have been foreseen?

Like many other technological elements, the valve suffered from material supply problems, delayed delivery times and forced reduced operating rates during the pandemic. At the same time, public attention is turning more and more to new technologies, solid state and digital, marking a significant decline in interest in the sector. as a result of Now that Russia is out of the race, China remains a leading valve manufacturer, at least for now. This, on one side, reassures people that they can buy them in the future – hoping that the frenzy accumulated on anxiety and speculation will soon end – on the other, it will lead to a new problem in the near future: the most obvious The world relies on the Chinese giant in everything related to technology, from chips to valves to electronics.

Western Electric will produce in the USA

Western Electric re-converts its Rossville facility to manufacture guitar amp tubes in the United States, among the products affected in the early Russian-Ukrainian crisis 2022.

The recent halt to imports from Russia is the result of a sanctions war that runs parallel to the tragedy of the war in Ukraine, also affecting the electronics and audio sectors.

Starting with the Electro Harmonix factory, which produces thermionic valves in Russia, quickly panicked guitarists and in recent weeks have grabbed the latest stocks from western retailers, emptying their warehouses in a few hours.
In a few days, Matthews' new announcement addressed the problem. Cost of the solution: the price for the end user increases and the bottleneck will continue to be felt due to the availability of equipment for sipping.
in conclusion, the questions remain open and a reorganization of the production cycle seems necessary. A few hours ago the news came that Western Electric, the historical name of American-made hi-fi, he intends to take the field firsthand, with the project to restart the US production of valves also for guitar use.

Robotic processes, automation and laser welding will ensure the high quality of the products that Western Electric will produce at its Roseville facility, in Georgia. At the same time, the experience and machinery in the possession of the company will allow the introduction on the market of valves at affordable prices, although inevitably superior to those imported from the east. Western Electric lo afferma: “Valve guitar amps use two main configurations, eight pin and nine pin. Very rarely, sette pin. We already have components of this type. Arranging for the most popular tubes isn't how you might think so big. In the case of the 12AX7, the company explained that since 1938 the type was easier to produce than the flagship 300B in the catalog. High-fidelity audio tubes have been redesigned over the years. ’90, after the reorganization of the company which took place under the new ownership of the entrepreneur Charles Whitener and the Westrex Corporation, with which Western Electric has reconfirmed itself as a reference in the field of hi-fi.

Once again, we are not faced with a definitive solution to the shortage of valves and the supply – in particular for the lower market segments – it is still far from accommodating the question, but it is clear that something is happening in the redistribution of international production chains.

I read it all in one breath, I read it all in one breath 10 but I put a 9 because there is a doubled paragraph (under the two valves and begins with: “Like many other technological elements, the valve has suffered…”.

Anyway thanks for the article and we hope to be able to get along again with the Russians in the future, I want to remind everyone, they are human like us and they don't want it all either. Unfortunately, I don't have time to write articles, I am always late on everything and I can not keep up with all the things to do for the site theremino.
