ParticipantA little less than 1000$ . In Italy it is distributed by Radiodetection, a company based in the UK, producer of excellent instruments , dedicated to troubleshooting and tracing, on underground cables. If you need to find a break in an underground line of 300 m, (driveway of a villa) and with this you will certainly repair it in an hour, you have almost paid off. Of course it's not an amateur solution and it takes me away a bit’ of satisfaction.

Participantthis is the tool i used:
https://www.vivax.it/doc/depliant/Ecometro-ponte-RB6000.pdf
if needed I can give a lot of information for its use.

Participant…. actually, the operation is very similar. I put the link to a photo, but I don't know if it's visible . The instrument is a multifunctional, for conductor failure diagnostics, both breaks, short circuits or low insulation, as well as multimeter. Come ecometro, it calculates the propagation speed of a known signal and represents it as a line on an LCD screen, more or less rippled depending on the roughness of the pair of conductors. Knowing the type of cable and the length, the propagation speed can be set by setting a “cable end”. With the cursor (calibrated in meters), we place ourselves on the peaks of the most significant waveforms. At the distance indicated, an inspection is carried out on the conductor under measurement. Said so, simply.

Participantsure, tomorrow I take some pictures of the instrument and if it is useful I scan the manual. Ciao

ParticipantHi everyone, I solved my problem using an ultrasound meter. This instrument detects interruptions and short circuits on a pair of conductors. Sorry if I didn't share the solution right away, but it is not what prompted me to ask for your Vs. Help.

Participant…exponential and linear variation output! you might consider using an op amp in a logarithmic configuration. for my problem, I am thinking of studying a tone generator and relative probe.
thanks and good job!Black Bart
Participant…exact, in fact I need to detect power failure (troubleshooting) in a 50V direct current circuit, normally traversed by a current of about 0.2A. The circuit is about 100 m, the pair of wires is sectional 1,5 mm2, placed inside a corrugated. The absence of contact is useful because I have no possibility to dissect the installation. If that's not possible, I can dissect i 50 Vcc and inject a frequency signal to search for it with a paired receiver, do you think it is possible?
